The Marmotte

The Marmotte is a legendary bike race over 174km with a 5,000 m height gain. It’s a gruelling ride and is considered to be one of the most challenging of any cyclosportive: four mountains in one day departing from Bourg-d’Oisans and finishing at Alpe-d’Huez.

Graham took part this year and completed the course in around nine hours. Here he is at the start.

And this is what he got at the end: a silver medal.

 Well done Graham!

Beryl Burton

As it’s Cycling Season, and as the Tour de France is currently in Yorkshire, it seems only right to remember a daughter of that county and someone who is considered to be Great Britain’s most successful woman cyclist: Beryl Burton.

Burton, from West Yorkshire, was not only a 13-time national champion but was five-times world champion over 3,000 metres. In 1967 she pedalled 277.25 miles in 12 hours. No woman rider has managed to better this time. It’s probably true to say that if she were a man, you’d probably have heard of her.

Today’s the 30th Anniversary of the Apple Mac, and here at Pencilkit we’re just about old enough to remember 1984. I know – ancient, right? Here’s an early (quite cryptic) ad for the company:
